What are the Little Gestures of Letting Us Know About their Hunger:
- Babies usually eat according to their hunger and emotional mood.
- They would whimper loudly when they go hungry and would just turn their head away when their little belly is full.
- It is vital to understand if the baby is offered with breastfeeding, and even if they eat less it is fine. As there is nothing more nutrient than breastfed milk.
- Whatever amount of food the baby takes, it is important to consult with a dietitian every three months to get a proper nutrient assessment for the infant.
Though every mother master over new recipes for their own baby. The first foods would also be those special traditional natural yummy, healthy recipes shared for generations.
Let’s know about such special food recipes given to babies as they grow up to be naughty.
Baby Food Recipes (6-8 Months)
Initially, the infants would just start with a small proportion of food. 1 to 2 tablespoons every 5-6 hours. It is important to monitor if they have any common food allergies.
One of such well-known recipe is Banana Powder (Ethakka Podi/Nendra Kaya) it is a traditional recipe which no baby miss to taste. Especially Keralites.
# 1. Banana Powder Mix (Ethakka Kurukku)
- Raw Banana Powder
- Liquid Texture of Karuppetty (jaggery)
Preparation : Mix two tablespoon of banana powder with 1 cup milk/water. Heat this mixture on a low flame and stir continuously untill it set. Later add karuppetty liquid and 1 to 1/2 tsp ghee. Around 45-75 ml is ideal for a mid-day meal. Feed the baby with medium temperature.
Baby Food Recipes (8-10 Months)
Finger millet which is popularly known as Ragi Flour is an ultimate healthy evening meal for the baby who is getting ready to walk around.
#2. Ragi Powder Mix (Ragi Kurukku)
- Ragi Flour – 1-2 tbsp (instant powder or homemade Ragi Flour)
- Panakarkandu or Rock Sugar
- Pure Ghee – 1/4 cup
- Milk or Water – 1 cup
Preparation: Add 2 tsp of Ragi to a pan, Add milk/water and slowly starts to dilute the mixture by adding Panakarkandu and Pure Ghee. Ragi has a factory of good nutrition and it is better to give before sunset.
Introduce boiled egg from 8 months- Once the egg is fully boiled squash the yolk by blending 2 drops of breast milk (if it is dry). Discard the egg white, until you make sure the egg is comfortable for the baby.
Mash the yolk with a spoon and mix it with a tiny bit of breast milk or formula if it is too dry for your baby to swallow.
Baby Food Recipes (10-12 Months)
Wheat porridge for babies, different variation can be done with Wheat flour porridge. One can use wheat alone if not almonds or moong dal by skiping wheat.
#3. Wheat Porridge
- Wheat flour mix powder – 2 tbsp
- Powdered Jaggery – 1.5 tbsp (optional)
- Water – ¼ cup + ¼ cup
- Co ws milk – ¾ cup (don’t add for babies under 10 months )
Preparation: Add wheat mix powder on to the sauce pan. Simultaneously in another vessel pour ¼ cup water, jaggery and boil it. Once the jaggery melts completely filter out the jaggery water with the help of a strainer. After the filtration pour this into the wheat mix powered. Slowly add the remaining ¼ cup of water. ‘Stir it gently and make sure there are no lumps and also avoid this porridge to stick to the vessel.’
Introduce fruits like Apple, Banana, Strawberry, Papaya. Either cut them into tiny slices or fruit mash (any one fruit at a time) with a pinch of raw sugar, water/milk.
Diluted rice/dates and mashed fruits with mother’s milk are some of the fundamental food recipes to start with till 12 months for infants. Gradually the texture can turn little thicker, but without any lumps by adding vegetables too.
